Cleansing Crystals

Crystals absorb energy from us and the environment surrounding them. It is necessary to regularly cleanse them to keep any negative or stagnant energy out of our space.

We regularly cleanse the crystals in our shop, especially before sending them out; however, we highly recommend you cleanse them yourself once you receive them. Consider what type of energy they might encounter on their way to you in the mail: a disgruntled post office worker or a delivery driver having a rough day. You never know if any of their energy could be transferred through the packaging, so it never hurts to cleanse your crystals once more. Plus, it's a great way to start the bonding process with them.

How often should you cleanse your crystals?

There's no one right answer, but we recommend at least once or twice a month. If you have had a hard few days or feel like there's something off with the energy of your home, it could be a good indication that cleansing is in order.

Corresponding your cleanses with the moon cycles can be potent as well. The new moon is a time to plant seeds of intention. Cleanse your crystals prior to charging them with a specific intention. The full moon is a celebration of the manifestation cycle. Cleanse your crystals as a ritual to close the working you started with the new moon.

What about crystal jewelry?

If you wear any sort of stone during the day, it is picking up on your energy and your environment's energy as well. Daily cleanses are a must. See below for the various methods.

How to cleanse your crystals

We've broken the methods down by element: air, fire, water, earth, and spirit.

While you can go with whichever method feels right, we've done this in case you'd like to deepen your practice with additional meaning. The elements can correspond to various intentions you're working with, in addition to the position of the planets. If you'd like to learn more about these topics, let me know in the comments.

Method #1 - Air

Using sound, such as singing bowls, music, healing frequencies and tones. Putting your crystals outside on a windy day.

Dusting them.

Breathwork - as long as you have cleansed your own aura beforehand.

*Smoke from burning herbs or incense. There are many types of herbs that have cleansing properties. We recommend using the book: Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham: https://amzn.to/3PQkBVw

*Note that there is debate on which element burning herbs and incense goes with. In our opinion it goes into all 3 - Air (the smoke), Fire (burning), and Earth (the herb itself). We've left it here in Air to avoid redundancy.

Method #2 - Fire

Putting your crystals out in the sun. Note that there are some crystals that will fade if left for more than a few minutes (e.g. rose quartz, smoky quartz, citrine, amethyst, calcites, certain fluorites, celestite, beryls, etc.). Always research your stones before using this method.

Method #3 - Water

Placing your crystals in any natural body of water (e.g. beach, spring, river, rain) is magical. You can cleanse them with tap water, as long as it does not contain any additives like chlorine or fluoride.

All crystals come from the earth and can have physical dirt left on them. Water helps to review their natural beauty and they will thank you for this.

If you wear crystal jewelry, washing them daily helps to remove germs and any unwanted energy.

***Please also research which crystals cannot get wet. Some will dissolve, splinter, or break if placed in water. Most polished stones are okay to get wet, but please always use caution.***

Method #4 - Earth

Burying your crystals in dirt or sand is the most potent cleansing method. The most common reason for using this method is when a crystal breaks or major negativity is felt with them. A crystal breaking can mean many different things, but sometimes it happens when the crystal took on a large amount of energy from something that it couldn't take again. This may be an energetic attack or a malevolent intention of some kind. If you do major shadow work with your crystals, it might be necessary to bury them for a little while too.

Using other crystals that can cleanse energy - selenite, satin spar, kyanite, black tourmaline, shungite, and calcites all have cleansing abilities. Selenite/satin spar is the most common crystal to use in cleansing and the most abundant. We carry a variety of selenite products to assist with your daily workings.

Using salt is another earth element method. Placing your crystals in white salt, pink Himalayan salt, or even black salt that you've made yourself can cleanse them. Note that some unpolished crystals can get damaged with salt, so do your research on them before using this method.

Method #5 - Spirit

The moon is a powerful way to cleanse and charge your crystals that doesn't do any damage. Lay them out during a full or new moon (see above notes about this method).

Using your own energy or Reiki to cleanse your crystals. Note that this method, while possible, should be cautioned to novices. We have to be in pure universal love light frequency in order to naturally cleanse auras or other objects. It takes skill and practice to be at a high frequency in order to only project out purifying energy.

Closing Thoughts

Again, the method you choose is your personal preference. Here at Kyria's Crystals and Curiosities, we mainly use selenite and smoke cleansing as those are the safest methods. Water cleansing is done on newly acquired crystals that have some dust on them and with our personal jewelry because they can carry germs or bacteria from wearing throughout the day.
